June babies, PEARLS are for you! Birthstone for June.
Pearls are a traditional birthstone for those of you born in June ..
Unlike most gemstones which are found on earth, pearls have an organic origin, they are the only gemstone to be created by an animal which makes them as unique as you!
Pearls are created inside the shells of certain clams and oysters and can be formed in saltwater or fresh water and they can either be natural or cultured.
Natural pearls are very rare these days as they are found in their natural habitat in oceans and rivers and most have been harvested by now.
Cultured pearls are grown in pearl farms, where mollusc's, which are the oysters or clams are grown and when the size is right to start growing pearls a pearl technician implants a tiny nucleus of mother of pearl into the oyster and then it’s left to grow the pearl.
The mollusc produces a substance called nacre around the nucleus and this is how pearls start to grow, as each layer of nacre coats the other the pearl gets larger, layers of nacre over layers of nacre form the pearl.
Nacre is what creates the quality of the shine of a pearl and that shining lustre is crucial to the beauty and value of the pearl.
Beautiful different colours are created by the type of oyster and the nacre it produces. The traditional deep cream colour is world renowned for classic timeless beauty.
Tahitian pearls are sometimes called black pearls and they are a dark colour and shine with coloured hues of purple, green and blue.
Blue pearls are the rarest of all and glow with rich blue beauty!
Possibly some of the prettiest of all pearls are pink pearls which grow in a variety of tone from a soft blush to rich bold pink.
Pearls represent friendship and faithfulness and are known to bring happiness to the person wearing them and that is one reason they make such an awesome gift. Pearls have traditonally been worn by brides and given as bridesmaids gifts for centuries.
And .... according to South Asian mythology, pearls were dewdrops from heaven that fell into the sea. They were caught by shellfish under the first rays of the rising sun, during a period of full moon. In India, warriors encrusted their swords with pearls to symbolize the tears and sorrow that a sword brings.
Pearls were also widely used as medicine in Europe until the 17th century. Arabs and Persians believed it was a cure for various kinds of diseases, including insanity. Pearls have also been used as medicine as early as 2000 BC in China, where they were believed to represent wealth, power and longevity. Even to this day, lowest-grade pearls are ground for use as medicine in Asia.
