How to use your jewellery cleaning pen

1. Release the solution: remove the cap and twist the base until a small amount of cleaning solution appears on the brush. On first use it may take a few twists.

2. Brush gently: brush your jewellery, focusing behind the stone, around the claws and in the setting, where dirt builds up.

3. Rinse well: rinse your jewellery under warm running water to wash away the lifted grime and solution. Close the sink plug first.

4. Dry and polish: pat dry and buff with the mini polishing cloth.

Tip: rinse the brush tip after each use and replace the cap firmly.

• Diamonds: natural and lab-grown

• Moissanite

• Sapphires and rubies: untreated or heat-treated only (see the not-safe list below)

• Topaz: including blue topaz, London blue topaz and white topaz

• Quartz family: amethyst, citrine, rose quartz, smoky quartz, lemon quartz and crystal quartz

• Others: aquamarine, morganite, garnet, peridot, spinel, tourmaline, tanzanite, iolite and zircon

• Cubic zirconia: and other hard, non-porous gemstones

• Metals: sterling silver, gold, rose gold, white gold and platinum

Do not use on
These gemstones are porous, soft, organic or treated, so they can absorb the cleaning solution or be damaged by it:

• Organic gems: pearls (natural, freshwater, cultured and keshi), mother of pearl, abalone and shell, coral, amber.

• Porous stones: opal, turquoise, lapis lazuli, malachite, chrysocolla, howlite, variscite and sodalite

• Soft stones: rhodochrosite, fluorite, apatite, kyanite, sunstone, moonstone, labradorite, onyx and other agates

• Treated stones:

  • emeralds, which are usually oil-treated

  • glass-filled or fracture-filled rubies, sapphires and diamonds

  • dyed stones, such as dyed jade, dyed agate and dyed howlite

  • coated stones, such as mystic topaz and AB-coated crystals

• Jade: jadeite and nephrite, as they may be treated or waxed

• Other pieces: foil-backed or glued stones, including vintage paste and costume jewellery with glued crystals; enamel; and pieces with resin, wood or leather

What is a diamond cleaning pen?
A diamond cleaning pen is a portable jewellery cleaner with a built-in soft brush and cleaning solution. It removes the dirt and oils that make diamonds and gemstones look dull, without needing an ultrasonic cleaner or a trip to the jeweller.

Does it only work on diamonds?
No. The Desiderate Diamond & Gemstone Cleaning Pen works on diamonds and most hard, non-porous gemstones, including sapphire, ruby, topaz, amethyst, citrine, aquamarine, garnet, quartz and cubic zirconia. It's not suitable for porous, organic or treated stones such as pearls, opals, turquoise and emeralds.

How often should I clean my rings?
Once a week keeps everyday rings and engagement rings sparkling. You can use it as often as you like.

Do I need to rinse after using it?
Yes. Always rinse your jewellery well with warm water after brushing, to wash away the lifted dirt and solution. Then dry and polish with the cloth.

Does it remove tarnish from silver?
The pen removes grime and build-up. For tarnish on sterling silver, use a polishing cloth. Our large Desiderate Sparkle Cloth is ideal.

Can I use it on gold-plated or vermeil jewellery?
Yes, but brush gently and don't scrub hard, as heavy scrubbing can wear plating over time.

Is it safe for my engagement ring?
Yes, for diamond, moissanite, sapphire and other hard-stone engagement rings. If your ring has emeralds, pearls, opals or treated stones, wipe it with a soft, damp cloth instead.

Can I take it on a plane?
Yes, it's under 100ml can go in carry-on
